YazidiBooks is an educational app for exploring Yazidi culture through books, quizzes and vocabulary. This policy describes, in plain language, what information the app collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. The policy is currently available in English only.

Who is responsible for your data

YazidiBooks is run by Khaleel Elias, a private individual based in Sweden, who is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. You can reach the controller at info@yazidibooks.com. If you believe your data has been handled improperly you have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection authority. In Sweden this is the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten, IMY), imy.se. You may also complain to the authority in the EU country where you live.

Information we collect

Account details: your email address, full name and account role, provided when you register or sign in with Google or Apple. Profile details (optional): during the one-time profile setup you can tell us your age and which Yazidi caste you belong to. Both questions are optional and can be skipped. Your age is used to show you books suited to your age group, so you do not have to filter content yourself. Learning activity: reading progress and reading sessions, quiz submissions and scores, vocabulary review progress, points, achievements and reading streaks. Class membership: if you join a class with a class code, your teacher can see your name and your progress on class assignments. Teacher requests: if you ask to become a teacher, we collect the WhatsApp number and the message you provide so an administrator can contact you to confirm your request. Contact messages: if you write to us through the contact form on our website, we collect the name, email address and message you enter so we can reply. You can use the contact form without an account. Device settings: your language preference and, if you enable notifications, a push notification token. Diagnostics: the app, our website and our admin dashboard send crash and error reports (via Sentry) so we can find and fix bugs. These reports contain the error itself plus your device model, operating system, app version, and the country your device region setting is set to — the setting you chose, not your location and not your IP address, which we never collect. It tells us a problem affects one country without telling us anything about you. Reports are stripped of personal details before they are sent: no account identifier, no email address, no phone number, no screen recording and no record of the screens you visited.

How we use your information

We use this information only to run the app: to save your reading and learning progress across devices, to power class features between teachers and students, to award points and achievements, to deliver notifications you have enabled, and to keep the app stable. We do not sell your information, show ads, or use your data for marketing.

Caste information

During profile setup the app asks which Yazidi caste you belong to (Şêx, Pîr or Mirîd). This question is entirely optional: you can choose "Prefer not to say" or skip the setup screen, and the app works exactly the same. Under the GDPR this counts as special-category data, so we hold it to a higher standard: it is stored only with your explicit consent, it is visible only to app administrators — never to teachers or other users — it never affects what content you can access, and it is never shared outside the app. We use it only to understand the community we serve. You can remove it at any time by contacting us or by deleting your account.

Where your data is stored

Your data is stored with Supabase on servers located in the European Union (Ireland). A small number of service providers process data on our behalf: Google (sign-in), Expo (push notification delivery) and Sentry (crash reporting, on servers in the European Union). Each provider receives only the minimum needed for its task.

Children's privacy

Student accounts are managed by teachers. For students we collect only what classroom features need: name, learning progress and quiz results. Student data is never used for marketing and is visible only to the student and their teacher.

Data retention and deletion

Your account data is kept for as long as your account exists. You can delete your account at any time from Profile, using Delete Account. Deletion is immediate and permanent: your profile, reading progress, quiz submissions, vocabulary progress, points, achievements and any teacher request you submitted (including the WhatsApp number) are all removed. Messages you send through the website contact form are not linked to an account. We keep them while we handle your enquiry and for a reasonable period afterwards; you can ask us to delete yours at any time using the contact address below.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct or delete your personal data, the right to withdraw consent (for example for the caste question or notifications), and the right to object to or restrict its processing. Most of this you can do directly in the app; for anything else, contact us using the address below.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top of this page. For significant changes we will let you know in the app.
